As traditional methods give way to smart technologies, the pool and spa sector is preparing for a major transformation in 2026. Chris Hayes, CEO of the British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF), discussed the industry’s new codes—from AI-driven predictive maintenance to automation solutions that enhance energy efficiency—and the impact of global collaborations on sectoral standards.

The BSPF has played a critical role in establishing standards, disseminating technical knowledge, and bringing industry stakeholders together in the UK pool and spa sector since 2000. CEO Chris Hayes describes the federation’s vision as “being recognized as a strong and effective representative of the pool, spa, and water leisure systems sector in the United Kingdom.” Hayes emphasizes that BSPF, in collaboration with other associations such as BISHTA and SPATA, provides members with technical guidance, education, and support.

According to Hayes, the key drivers of change in the sector are increasing wellness expectations and lifestyle shifts. “People have less free time and are increasingly seeking instant gratification; therefore, manufacturers are providing automation, app-controlled water monitoring, and advanced energy management tools to offer consumers greater convenience, improved safety, and cost savings,” he explains. He adds that AI-supported predictive maintenance can detect equipment issues before they arise, reducing downtime and extending product lifespan.

Hayes also highlights BSPF’s international collaborations. Through partnerships with EUSA and WAPSA, UK practices are aligned with European and global standards. “Sharing best practices between countries allows professionals to communicate with peers and test applications in other markets,” he notes, emphasizing the importance of global collaboration.

Addressing the technical benefits of digitalization, Hayes states, “More control is possible to optimize facilities without compromising safety. It is very likely that more pools will be equipped with dosing and monitoring systems in the future.” He stresses that sustainability is no longer merely an environmental goal but also a regulatory requirement, with BSPF supporting members in areas such as energy use, water consumption, and chemical management through its WAPSA and EUSA partnerships.

Hayes points out that training and certification programs play a central role in ensuring quality and safety in the sector. Both BISHTA and SPATA provide continuous professional development programs and certified technical training. Regarding Turkey, he sees high potential in private pools and emphasizes that meeting minimum standards in public pools is crucial for tourist satisfaction.

Reflecting on 2025, Hayes notes significant growth in technology and AI adoption across Europe, while Asian manufacturers are increasingly ensuring their products comply with international standards. Looking ahead, he emphasizes that global knowledge sharing and inter-association cooperation will bring innovation to the sector. He concludes by wishing all readers a prosperous 2026.
